The College Essay
The College Essay Youâll recall a Type A essay discusses a potential career aspiration, whereas a Type C essay ending may be a bit more open-ended. A description of these extracurricular activities may have sounded like a laundry-list of the authorâs accomplishments. As we mentioned earlier, you donât know who is reading your essay or how they feel about these subjects. Itâs best not to offend them or make them feel uncomfortable. But because sheâs naming other stickers (which connects them to the essayâs thematic thread), she basically gets to name-drop those activities while showing other parts of her life. If you wrote âchef,â for example, push yourself beyond the common value of âhealthâ and strive for unexpected values. Make sure that your essay is more than a recitation of the accomplishments, activities, and experiences already hashed out in the application. If your essay doesnât present any new information, it will be dull and forgettable. If you really want to make an impression, let your personality shine through. The essay is supposed to reveal information that you havenât had a chance to discuss elsewhere in the application. Itâs meant to be a deeper dive into who you are beyond the numbers and accolades. In this case, you should see whether the same essay can work for both, or whether you can make slight changes to one essay to fully answer the question of the second essay. Reflect on your MUN experience in essays and interviews. Seek advice from people youâve met through MUN who are attending or have attended competitive colleges. Living away from home for the first time can be intimidating. Try joining clubs and organizations to develop a new community and to make new friends with similar interests. Activities can also help you build confidence while developing important leadership and teamwork skills. If youâre interested in politics, try joining student government. If you just want a break from studying, find out when the Ultimate Frisbee Club meets. Make sure that you are confident in your essay and accept feedback, but donât allow others to change your essay in any way that will cause it to lose its original message. Parents should always help their child in a positive way as long as they are not writing the ideas for the student. Editing is vastly different from original writing so this needs to be clarified first, as it has to be the voice and personal memories of the applicant not the parent. The sooner the family treats this as a team effort it will be much easier for the 12th grader to feel as though they are not alone in this process. We would expect a nursing applicant to have had academic training and extracurricular choices that support a desire to help others. A student who highlights their love of community service but has only one or two short-term service opportunities is probably not as committed as he or she wants to claim. Editing for grammatical errors and spelling mistakes is fine, but donât change the voice of the essay. If an essay is too âpolishedâ it may seem inauthentic, creating confusion in the reader. I felt isolated and at times disillusioned; my grades started to slip. One important difference between the Type A and Type C essays is the ending. Instead of mourning victims of horrible crimes, I felt personally responsible, only capable of focusing on my guilt. The war had manifested itself in my racing thoughts and bitten nails when I decided that I couldnât, and wouldnât, let it win. If more than one college has the exact same question with the same length criteria, you can use the exact same essay. Often two different essay questions can be talking about the same core idea using different phrasing. How has cooking taught you about âaccountability,â for example, or âsocial changeâ? Weâve already read the essay on how cooking helped the author become more aware of his health. An essay on how cooking allowed the author to become more accountable or socially aware would be less common. War followed me to freshman year of high school when I wanted more than anything to start new and check off to-dos in my bullet journal. Every time news of a terror attack spread, I could hear the whispers, visualize the stares.
